The Ministry Of Defence Art Collection consists of fine art and antiques, including paintings, drawings, engravings, photographs, clocks and furniture. All the items are in public ownership, and all have a close association with the history and heritage of the Armed Forces.
One of the main reasons for the existence of the Art Collection is because of the generosity of donors in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Bequests and gifts were made to the Admiralty and, later, to the War Office and it is these items that form the backbone of today's Collection.
Narrated by the Curator of the Collection, this film offers
an insight into the management of the archive, and discusses its origins, context and significance. Individual histories of some of the most significant works are examined in detail.
